Out My Scope is an album that specializes in a very specific brand of punk nostalgia, one that recalls the better years of the ’80s, not as a vehicle for aesthetic embellishment, but rather as a time of tumult and growth that sonically informs that band’s compositions and fills their soundscapes with fuzzy, reverb laden riffs.

This new LP is certainly more varied than the last one, spanning more genres and sounds. On this outing the band veers somewhat away from the power pop and punk influenced songs and more toward indie rock and indie pop.

I’ve found myself listening to it several times, basking in the Replacements style breaks and changes, Hüsker Dü rhythm and Dinosaur Jr. riffs. Not to say the track is derivative of any of these classics, as HiGH is merely creating original music that their predecessors would be damn proud of.

HiGH are another New Orleans band that I’ve had my eye on since their last full length Bummer Burner that I loved. Craig Oubre (guitar/vocals) had been feeding me mixes and demos of the new tracks and I was blown away. The record is great and I love that a picture of Isidore’s (vocals/bass) father, Marco, is the album cover. Go listen to this record… its fantastic!

As HiGH approached being a band for two years, and having played mostly local shows, we decided to start trying to spread out a little more in 2014. We did a short run of out-of-town gigs earlier this year and they were mostly successful, so we figured we would try our luck with something longer. Nine shows in ten days, about 3,000 miles.
